I wanted to play around a bit with some of the mythological ideas. I don't know how well it worked -- I'd welcome discussion of how people are envisioning the mythological aspects of the story, and what y'all think worked and didn't.

Kilikina comes to a conclusion that isn't quite the answer she was hoping for.

It's just self indulgent and me playing with an awesome set of concepts.

community standards/guidelines concerning warnings and ratings: discuss

What do we want to do about labeling 9NH content for what's in it? My thought is that we should insist on rating each work on a rating scale like AO3's (General Audiences, Teens and Up, Mature, Explicit, Not Rated) and giving each work at least one content label using a warning system like AO3's (Rape/Non-Con/Dub-Con, Underage Sexual Activity, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Choose Not To Warn, No Mandatory Warnings Apply—my phrasing could use work, but 'no archive warnings apply' won't work for not on an archive), and further content notes are at the discretion of the contributor. I want to hear the thoughts of other contributors, potential contributors, and readers.

I'm also thinking about insisting that anybody who uses highlight-to-read warnings use the screenreader-friendly highlight-to-read HTML found over at access_fandom.

Discussion: True, Partly True, and False

I got to fooling around with my bingo cards tonight and wrote a set of three vignettes. Each of them has a totally different flavor and says something about the Nebula's Heart. They don't feature the main characters, but rather are the kinds of lore our heras are likely to turn up during their quest. These are:

"Crystal Pains"
"Claret"
"The Goddess Who Molded Herself"

My proposal is that one of these three tales is true, one is partially true but exaggerated or otherwise mixed, and the third is a complete fabrication. I thought it would be fun to post all three here and then vote on which should be which. Consequently I haven't tagged them as canon yet, although they are canon-eligible.

Please read and follow these before contributing to Nine for the Nebula's Heart.

* Be respectful.

** Respect your fellow contributors.

** Respect the real-world diverse groups to which these fictional characters belong. And all the groups to which none of them belong, for that matter.

* The core canon is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. All canonical work in the 9NH universe will be so licensed.

** Do not falsely claim that someone else's work is yours. If you borrow an element from another contributor, give credit where credit is due.

** Do not post work in the 9NH universe with intent for it to be canonical if you are unwilling to let it be adapted by other contributors.

** Do not edit other contributors' work without their permission. Note the distinction between 'adapt'—Creative Commons defines this as 'remix, transform, and build upon'—and 'edit'; it is the distinction between "your work based on or including elements of their work" and "their work that you made changes to". There is nothing in the CC BY-SA license preventing you from, for example, editing "Before You Make Your Move" by alexconall into a poem half as long, but doing so without explicit permission would be a jackass move and disrespectful to your fellow contributor (see guideline one).

** You may post work in the 9NH universe that you do not wish adapted if you tag it "-fanwork". We will respect your wishes.

** You may make money off your 9NH contributions. For example, you may create a 9NH work from a crowdfunding Creative Jam prompt, and then offer that work for sponsorship. Just don't be a jackass about it. There is for example nothing in the CC BY-SA license to prevent you from selling copies of "Before You Make Your Move" without so much as changing a word, but selling copies of that poem without at least sharing the money with alexconall who wrote it would be a jackass move and disrespectful to your fellow contributor (see guideline one). This does not mean that you are required to share any money you make with the 9NH contributors generally; we're trusting that any 9NH work you sell will be overwhelmingly your own creative effort.

* Tag your work.

** "ch: xxx" tags are for what characters are included in the work. These tags are important. If you include a character who has no existing tag, create the tag.

** "au: xxx" tags are for who created the work. This tag is important. If you have never posted to the comm before, create your tag.

Nine for the Nebula's Heart core canon

I'm taking ysabetwordsmith's title prompt from the May crowdfunding Creative Jam and her text prompts "A female questing band with one male member" and "A fellowship on quest, each of a different ethnicity", and putting them in the blender. I'm envisioning 9NH as a mythpunk movie or movie series with a setting sort of a cross between Seanan McGuire's October Daye 'verse and Tamora Pierce's Emelan, queer and intersectionally feminist to the Nth degree. The Nebula's Heart is the quest object, or perhaps the quest destination.

I present thumbnail sketches of our nine questers:

1) Manisha Bhattacharya (Hindu) is the leader. She is assertive and attentive to others, but worries about anything that might go wrong (even if improbable) and blames herself for anything that does go wrong (especially when she could have done nothing about it). She has magic with rocks.

2) Amani El-Amin (Iraqi) is the second-in-command. She is patient and pragmatic, but perfectionistic and private. She has magic with water.

3) Nakahara Hinata (Japanese) is the strategist. She is imaginative and flexible, but bossy and untrusting. She has magic with fire.

4) Ndidi Franklin (African-American) is the researcher. She is serious and self-reliant, but absent-minded and easily upset. She has magic with words.

5) Jacinta Lopez (Latina/Mayan) is the caretaker. She is honest and kind, but shy and of the unshakable opinion that she has worth only in her ability to help others. She has magic with dance.

6) Kilikina Ruan (Chinese/Native Hawaiian) is the medic. She is self-confident and conscientious, but trusts too easily and has a hard time saying no (even when she should). She has magic with plants.

7) Sinéad Gabrielli (Irish/Italian) is the weapons master. She is practical and bold, but self-righteous and harsh. She has magic with fiber art.

8) Tamar Levine (Jewish) is the muscle. They are quiet and intuitive, but tense and impulsive. They have magic with air.

9) Paul Eckstein (German) is the hacker. He is outgoing and matter-of-fact, but competitive and stubborn. He has magic with lightning.

At least six of these nine people are queer. At least two (counting Tamar) are trans. At least one person (who may or may not be Tamar) is both. The fellowship includes at least two physically disabled people, at least two mentally ill people, and at least two neurodiverse people; there may be overlap.

Note the terms on the CC BY-SA license. I am explicitly inviting anyone who so desires to play with these characters, in hopes that we will build a collaborative (and doubtless multistranded, with contradictions between strands) canon.
